A bit of Action for your weekend.....

One of the simplest things to do in Photoshop is setting up
an
Action - an automated task that you can assign to a batch
of images, a whole folder of images or just a few that you
pick. This could be something as simple as a certain way of
saving things or resizing to certain dimensions but can go
as far as your imagination will take you really.

I use actions to apply logos to my work when putting on
social networking sites or shareware and I also commonly
use it when doing particular events, adding a set standard
'curve' action to adhere to all images which I know in
general, will work with everything. The other thing I tend
to use it for is saving files when I am e
diting each one,
saves you saving as each time and saves loads of time for
more important stuff!(Like making a cuppa while all your
work saves!)

The 'Action' tab can be found alongside the history tab and
within the same palette. If yours is not visible then add it
in your
view function.

Basically what you are doing is recording an Action and then
saving it so that you can use it on a load of other files later.

First you need to decide what action you are saving, for
this purpose I am picking
'Curves'. Open up one of the
files from the batch of images you are going to edit and
you thinkwill need a similar curve action on.

Once opened go to your Action Tab and click on the 'New' Icon
as illustrated. Save your Action as something memorable - you
can even colour code it if you wish to group your actions
later. Once saved it is instantly recording and
anything you
do to that image will be saved within the 'Action.'

So curves - open up the curves (CTRL M or in Adjustments) and do a
standard curve that you like for contrast. Now save the image and close. Now stop the action using the stop button as illustrated.

Your action is now saved.

Now your going to want to apply this curves action to a whole bunch of images to save you a load of time where you could be otherwise watching the JK show or making yourself a coffee. Either way it saves you time and your mouse finger!

So still in photoshop, with action stopped and image closed, go to File - Automate - Batch. Once here you will be able to select the 'Action' you require (plus a load of automated pre loaded actions) and then the folder to which this action should apply.

You can then select how to save the images. So do nothing and they stay open or save them to a specific folder or location. You can even go as far as specifying different file names or extensions.

Once you have decided all of that (see red arrows) press ok, sit back and watch the action take place!

Yep, its that simple.

Get connected.....

Continuing on from my tips and tricks last week I thought I would do something along the same lines but not necessarily Photoshop based. I talked before about networking (if you are an avid reader you will remember these posts some months ago) and thought it was important to talk about these again.

In the current climate you need to stay motivated and digg your heels in when it comes to not giving up! (Imagine a 3 year old refusing to put back the Percy Pig toy because damn you and the irate shop keeper, they
will have it!).....

1st networking:
DO IT.
There now thats over.

2nd, remembering who you are & why you are doing what you are doing! For a long time and even still now I get caught up in what other people think I should be doing, what their judgement of success is and how I should be achieving various goals (they have established) in my business. Then I remember, this is about me. I didn't quit a fairly well paid job in fashion to fail. No way. Like I said to someone yesterday, this is something that has to work because I have no other option and if I fail or end up losing what feels like a massive one sided fight right now, man I am going to go down kicking and screaming!!

Fat Talent among other things, has helped keep me motivated, remain in touch with people in a similar business (networking!!) and more importantly have fed my ideas hungry brain and helped to filter the bad from the good. The monthly fashion and music show has introduced me to a whole bunch of awesome people & opened up business opportunities that I just need to start utilising. So this sounds like a huge plug for FT and in a way it is, but you know what, I wrote this off my own back and I think their fab! If you can, get yourself involved with them or a similar organisation. Get yourself a mentor, get yourself connected and follow your instincts! (Well it has been a weekend of tributes with all this MJ stuff so thought I would join the riot!)

rocks, small stones & BIG mountains....

The last few days have been rocky. Business has ups and downs, we all know this but when you are on your knees in desperation worrying about money, when your next job is going to make an appearance and sifting through marketing tips but really not knowing how to deal with them....things do not seem good. Then, wisely, you decide to learn more about other people's business's. Normally this would fill you with ideas and encouragement, look where you can be! Ok well bugger that, today I hit ROCK bottom and these successful companies and friends achieving goals and putting their marketing ideas into feasible well executed plans are nothing but a slap in the face. I felt truly defeated. I am a creative, not a business person and what i thought i knew, I realized is just not enough to get me through.

What do you do when you feel like this, who do you turn to?! There is a great need at the moment for a group of marketing people who offer advice. Not big PR firms or marketing companies but small freelance business savvy folk who can offer decent, affordable, structured and achievable marketing for the small business - I can see a place for that.

Anyway, after threatening to set a crow loose on someone and hoping their eyes were pecked out; shouting a little & having a good moan to a friend, oh and that huge chocolate bar I felt a little better. Then my business link advisor sent through some marketing stuff we had discussed last week which means I can make a true start on that marketing plan i should have done last year. Then a very good client of mine decided to spend another £700 on digital files and another phone call to offer me some assisting. My afternoon was looking brighter and brighter and it was even topped off with the possibility that I may be able to see my man this weekend as he is willing to drive from Manc to give me what is now, a celebratory hug!

Ramblings I know but the motto of this little ditty - Have faith! Business doesn't land on your lap and good luck doesn't exist, you make your own luck. But with some plans in place, some promises to yourself that you really will keep, a goal in mind and some encouragement from friends and you will get there! I believe again, almost!

If you are still struggling and need some inspiration, I have listed below some websites that I often find useful for an up the bottom kick; if not that then some darn good time wasting!

EXCLUSIVE to the performers...........

Not only do we have a birthday spectacular Fat Talent LIVE coming up but I am here to tell you about the exclusive deal available to all performers past & present . Myself and DJ CHEF from Make Me Music are offering a music and photography package, allowing you to get 4 x hours studio time (includes mixing, mastering, recording plus promo to agencies!) and an hours professional, creative photography for a bargain basement price. See the attached flyer and example pics to see what can be achieved. Our first punter was Queeny (aka Amy D) and she was chuffed with the results saying, "I have had soooo much positive feedback from your images and they everything from the day has gone towards making a press pack which has already helped me to secure more live gigs."
Thank you Queeny!

For additional info contact carli@carli-art.co.uk .Also for a full overview of the pics visit the Carli-Art Facebook page

On another note its time to offer some more photo hints and some bits of advise. This week I thought I would deal with customer service and marketing. Not that I am a guru on the subject but I had a marketing meeting with Business Link this week and I pride myself on always delivering over and above so just some quick one's:

- Phone don't email, or always follow up with a call.

- Be polite and if you don't know the answer, just call back. (I suffered with this one and under quoted massively on a job then had to do it at the reduced price - guts!)

- Aim to get back to people as soon as possible. If you are late then just apologise.

- Be nice. Sounds simple but just be really nice! Smile, say please and thank you and generally be happy even if you feel like crap inside!!!

- Dress well and dress smart. You turn up in pikey trainers and a moth eaten shirt your potential client will not respond well to the £500 bill you put in their hands.

- Network, network, network. Talk to them and find out information that not only makes you sound interested (cos you are) but also helps you to network and find out if there are other opportunities.

- Get to know your client a little before the shoot - discover more about them and better pics will be had.

- Have a plan. Have goals and a timescale to do them within... it will help you focus.

- Evaluate all of your marketing ideas and record the results. You need to know what worked, why it worked? and what didn't and work & why?(phew!)

- Ask for help. Contact friends or good clients for their opinion!

I guess its all common sense really but I get seriously blinkered when running my own business, some people suggest things to me and I wonder how I missed them!

"well can uncle John JUST tile my bathroom?!"

Weekly pic update here we come. Ok so thought I would write something useful or at least try. I am not feeling witty today (I blame the sun, I usually manage to muster up some wit at least) so onwards & upwards with a burst of knowledge to tell you lovely people. Naturally, we are going to be focusing on photography and a few odd bits and bobs really which I think you may find useful.

The most feared question by all photographers is "do you mind just taking a few pics if your there anyway." or ...."Oh can you just snap a pic of Uncle Ron."

This drives photographers (ok maybe just me) I-N-S-A-N-E!!!!!!!!! So, if your mum who just happens to be an accountant was at the party and I turned up and asked her to have a browse through my taxes would that be acceptable?! If your brother was a builder and I rocked up with a shelf that needed a bracket fixing or a load of bricks and cement asking him to knock me up a quick shed, would he do it....would you think I was insane?! If you get asked this question - KNOW your answer.

Basically you are your photos. EVERY photograph you EVER take you will be judged on. As a photographer that is what people do. And as a photographer why would you want to take a bad picture? Every pic you take you will try 100%, you will put all your effort into and want it to be good. So 'Just' taking a quick snap should not be an option for you.

It is a good idea to start with clear definitions. I have done the whole guest & photographer thing and it doesn't work, you are either one of the other. You bring all your equipment, wear your comfy shoes and get the picture you and the friend / client are after OR you put on your heels, wear your favorite skirt and have nothing in your handbag but some lippy & your i-phone.

QUICK TIPS......
1) Bounce your flash off white walls or corners to create a softer look and to avoid blinding your subject

2) Set your ISO to the lower value rather than the higher. Use as low as you can get away with to avoid noise. (If you are using the 5D Mark 2 you will not need to worry about this, that bad boy can go up to 1600 easily!)

3) Experiment with angles. Don't move your subject, you move! Stand somewhere it makes you feel uncomfortable and get a new view.

4) Use the history tool brush on Multiply (darker) or Screen (lighter) to adjust the shades and highlights on your image where you might usually dodge and burn. The effect is far more subtle and you have far more control over the exposure changes and colour.

More next week - if there is something you want to ask / want to rant about or want to know......give me a shout and i will post! carli@carli-art.co.uk.

PS: Competition to follow - win 'How to Photograph Almost Anything!' Details to follow in next few weeks.

Wana-B / Plastic Chairs and Copper Piping.....

Too many days (ok I mean weeks) have passed since I last posted which in one way is a good sign cos it means i am busy elsewhere, however I am saddened by the fact I have let the Fat Blog fall by the wayside like a discarded crisp packet. However, here I am and with intent to pick up the posting again. So to get things moving again I wanted to up date you on a few things and make it a free for all, future posts will see more structure but for now.....crazeee days!!

A few things I have discovered over the past few days......

1) I could become a burglar if photography fails. I discovered this after breaking into my own house using a plastic chair, a bit of foam insulation used in floors and a copper pipe. Please note; a few more discoveries can be found on my Wana-b blog @ http://www.carliart.blogspot.com/ for those of you that want to learn more about poo and bleach. (Yea didn't think so!)

2) I love networking. It really works and this is what I will get back to concentrating on in future posts along with random ramblings about my days behind the lens. I know 'they' tend to go on about it but seriously it works. Not only does it offer you fab opportunities to learn new skills, gain work experience or even get new business, it also leaves you feeling positive about your own knowledge and most importantly; motivated. A good friend of mine has started a monthly get together of local photographers and its great. Ok so last meeting so more wine and chin wag about sperm donation than anything else but it was a good evening and I learnt some good things about prime lenses, shooting portraits and that its not just me who struggles with pricing. It is one massive mine field! To anyone else out there confused by this area of the photo world, stick in there.

3) Marketing is important in these times. This is not a time to stop marketing. Companies are going to be more fussy about who they book and are going to make sure everything they are looking at is not only affordable but more importantly value for money. Cheap does not necessarily do it. If you offer great customer service and quality images and your prices are fair, that is enough. Do not stop marketing though, in fact work harder at it and show the competition what you have got that they haven't!

4) I have lost interest in Twitter....already I hear you cry?! What social site is next on the scene?!

5) Tiredness in most cases can be resolved with coffee, tea, chocolate and sweets. If on your own sat in front of a laptop a fair amount of procrastination helps as does word wars over skype or some form of chat. If with someone else, it has been suggested that farting competitions, smoking and picking up paper with your tongue can also be extremely stimulating!

6) There are about 300 shades of cream to buy. I just want one, one nice cream to decorate my new boudoir. I am confused by promises of whispering heritage, candle cream and touches of milk.

7) Our first successful music and photo deal was successfully completed last Friday. This is an EXCLUSIVE deal to Fat Talent Artists whereby you get an hour in a recording studio and an hours professional photography in one easy package. Plus we help with image building, brand identity and promotion. The pictures are complete and the lovely Queeny D was the special guest.....interview and 'how was it really' blurb to come! For now enjoy some of the images at the Fat Talent Face-book Group or the Carli-Art Fan Page.

Show me the money.......

Havent visited in a while and offered my advise, or rather little bits of info that i pick up along my bumpy journey....anywho....here is a little something for you.....

Pricing is always a difficult thing when it comes to Photography and it seems like you may never get it right, or is that just me?!  Anyway, it is hard and having reviewed and reviewed my prices it is time i make a proper plan....something I should have done a while ago!

Anyway for any of you out there looking for some pricing advise, please see below some of the websites I used and tips I found useful - good luck!

£ - Look at your competition.  Not just within your 'dedicated' skill set or specific photography type but also locally what people are charging and to whom.
£ - Be confident in your pricing.  Start low when less experienced and then you can increase your rates in the future, getting the work and word of mouth marketing is always better.  I have done a fair bit of free or low priced work and from what I have heard, as have other photographers.
£ - http://www.londonfreelance.org/feesguide/phdigtxt.html
£ - http://www.freelanceuk.com/photographers/index.shtml

love is change......

Time: 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Location: Carnaby Pop Up Gallery
Street: 63 Broadwick Street
City/Town: London, United Kingdom

Email: sara.shamsavari@gmail.com
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this compelling new exhibition Sara Shamsavari combines photography and the written word to reveal and celebrate love in its many manifestations. We are living in an uncertain time of change – social, political and economic – but throughout these shifts and upheavals, love endures as a constant force - itself a driver of change. Love has the power to change the way we think, feel and live today.
Love is Change celebrates the diversity and the essential unity of the human experience. In a troubled world of division, materialism and conflict, Shamsavari’s photographs show us that love’s presence can still be seen all around, reminding us of its potential to heal, unite and transform.
Visitors are also encouraged to engage directly in the exhibition by recording on paper their thoughts on the transformational power of love. These notes will be displayed in an interactive space forming part of the overall show

FEATURE: Weave those webs......

Welcome to my feature! does this need an introduction? either way here it is....I am getting on the networking train so will be offering advice (lighter sense of the word) asking for advice, airing my thoughts, testing and also trying to get some networking going on the blog through this here feature.

People always said to me 'It's who you know, not what you know" well darn it they were and still are right. Networking is possibly one of the most valuable marketing tools ever! This does not just involve joining networking groups or social sites but it also involves being on a marketing mission all the time. By all means don't push too hard and bore the death out of all your mates but be prepared with business cards; let people know what you do and recognize opportunities. Don't be afraid to ask your friends or family about people they know or if your out and about & chatting to someone you think could be a benefit working with, ask. Suggest ideas for working together that benefit you both, know what it is with in your business that they could do with; and let them know what you could do for them. Give them a card and ask for one back, and don't leave and forget it. Email them or phone and follow up the invitation.

Joining networking groups online or in your local area is also clearly a great way to start. There are literally hundreds out there and to be honest I am still baffled by the number and diversity of each group. You only know what works for you once you have tried it though. But get looking and don't forget your roots (hello J-LO aka Jenny from the block!) - look around your local area or within your region at what groups or clubs meet. Communities offer strong networking opportunities and people like a friendly local face so work it baby. More on different groups and my experiences to date next week.......

For the moment - people like to recommend. Remember that. People like to offer advice!

White stuff......

No, I am not talking about milk or even cocaine...I am talking snow!  Well it wouldn't be right if somebody didn't write something about it following today's antics (NO buses in London, please what are people made of these days?!)  so here I am being predictable! Anyway, thought I would cheer things up a little and find some beauty in between the hot cocoa, frost bitten toes & regret that you avoided that extra layer cos it made you look bulky. Google snow pictures and you get the following....i like.......

Photographer 'Luc Coiffait'

Name: Luc Coiffait

Age: 20

Lives: Newcastle-upon-Tyne,England

Job: Landscape/Fashion Photographer

How long you been interested in photography?
I’ve always messed around with a camera on family holidays and stuff, but only really took it seriously when i got my first ‘real camera’ (dslr) 2 years ago.

What interests you about Landscape -I notice that urban landscape doesn’t feature very much in your work?
Having grown up in the countryside I’ve always felt more at home photographing there, and living in Northumberland means I have some of the best locations for landscape photography right on my doorstep.

What elements are shared in your fashion work?
Because of my love for landscape photography I like to do all my fashion work on location, usually somewhere interesting which adds to the feel of the image.

What are your views on camera techniques, versus the manipulation of prints using software such as Photoshop etc?
Personally I like to do as much as I can in camera, this gives a truer reflection of the moment you have just captured. On some occasions though, fashion work needs that little bit extra.

Do you have any strong views on Digital as opposed to Film, Colour as opposed to Black & White?
I personally prefer film for its quality and satisfaction value, but digital is just more practical and less can go wrong.

Are you interested solely in stills or do you have any interest working in cinematography?
For now I will stick to stills, maybe when finances allow i will try something new.

What are your views on Photography & the internet and issues of copyright?
The internet is a great way of getting your images seen by millions but the dark side is how some people use your images. For example a guy from london regularly copies my gf’s work (Lara Jade - larafaire on deviantart). He recently used the same model, stylist and make up artist on a shoot. This shoot was done in a place just outside a small town where Lara lived and has shot at herself for most of her work. This means he travelled from London, the photography capital of the UK packed with locations, to a small town near Birmingham using the same team Lara had, and shot similar but not as equally impressive images.
Things like that concern me, I believe in crediting your inspiration source if sourced from someone elses creative work. But at the end of the day, people who do this wont get far, as everything they do would have already been done!

Will landscape & fashion continue side by side in your Photography or do you think Fashion will ultimately dominate?
Well the bottom line is, fashion will pay the bills, Landscape wont. I like shooting both, but prefer landscape so i will shoot fashion for work and continue landscape as a hobby and something to get away from it all.

I know you’re still very young, but is there any advice you would pass on at this stage?
Get out and about using your camera every day! I used to travel to a new location nearby every Sunday with my mum, then gradually shot more and more often. Make sure your developing a unique and original talent in yourself =] hope thats ok?

LUC IS CURRENTLY FEATURED IN THIS MONTH’S PRACTICAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND HAS EMBARKED ON A JOINT PROJECT WITH PHOTOGRAPHER LARA JADE (FASHION/FINE ART/PORTRAIT). 2009 IS GOING TO BE AN INTERESTING YEAR.
A PHOTOGRAPHER TO WATCH.

A Selection from Luc’s Work can be seen on fattalent.com with links to his website.

"But they cant be real people" Charlie said....

I LUUURRRVEEE Tim Walker, if there is anyone I truly inspire & gets me all excited & giggly about fashion photography it is this man. His fanciful images contain such unimaginable detail, demonstrating bits of those dreams we've had or things we have envisioned after reading a great story that you couldn't possibly think could be visualised. His latest shoot in Vogue is amazing and focus's on the stories of Road Dahl; he brings together seamlessly art, fashion, photography & the genius of Dahl. Capturing in an unexpected and perfectly mastered frenzy, the sets are bright, bold and totally ridiculous - one day I hope to be able to spill my imagination, questions, fantasies & intrigue onto a page like he can. Fabulous!!

"A woman who my mother knows came in and took off all her clothes,
Said I not being very old, 'By Golly gosh you must be cold'
'No No!' she cried 'I indeed am not, I'm feeling devilishly hot!"
(RHYME STEW - ROAD DAHL)
